WINGS 3 PENGUINS 2
GO WINGS!!!!!!!!
As you all know I love sports!!
NASCAR, Baseball, Hockey...
Whatever the season might be...and right now
it is all about the Detroit Red Wings!!!
I wanted to share the most famous
Tradition of the Wings....the Octopus...
and now the NHL has banned this
tradition that started in 1952!!!
This is Al Sobotka, who goes out on the ice and
picks up any octopi that are thrown on the ice.
In 1991, he started twirling the octopus as he left the
ice. This would get the crowd all revved up!!
Now the NHL has banned the twirling,
go here to see Al in Action!!!
Al is one of the Zamboni driversand the building manager
A dedicated Fan
We love our Wings and the Octopus!!!
"The Joe"
The Joe Louis Arena
The first game between the Detroit Red Wings and
the Pittsburgh Penguins is Saturday May 24, 2008
in Detroit at "The Joe"
I will be watching...GO WINGS!!!!!!!
Lotsa Love,
Gig
**UPDATE**

Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm first again, I"m first again HA HA HA HA HA HA!. I guess Pita must have come down on them to ban the octopus thing. Perhaps if they could just get a rubber one and twirl it instead of a live one. Then Pita might not be so unhappy. You see rules kill traditions. That's why I hate rules. Hope you have a happy memorial day. Cece
I was first at the Onion, boy are we good or what!! It wasn't Pita, it was the supposed "gunk,or matter the octopi left on the ice", somebody might get hurt. I am surprised Pita had not come down on them, but they have doing this for over 50 years. I don't think they will quit though, I will be watching tonight and see what happens.
I too hope you and your "Boys" have a wonderful memorial weekend.
XO, Gig
Dear Debbie,
That was a good piece of info for me... i never heard it before...
Hope you are having a quiet, beautiful weekend..

Go Habs!
Oh dear.
Too late.
What a Hoot! How did that all come to be? Couldn't of happened in Louisiana as the cajuns would have eaten it in the stands before it ever got hurled onto the ice!lol How sad that the tradition is ending...maybe a stuffed Octi...."not the same"! Only in America could we be so sensitive to the feelings of Octopi and not humans!
Love your energy...but watch out for that cat's gambling problem!
Love,
Shara
Rob, who you know plays hockey and is awesome, is a Bruins fan. I asked him "What should we say to Gig?" He replied "Both teams are great, but Detroit's going to win. There ya go. See you at the Cafe when they do baby!!! Oh, you're buying!
I have to tell this story because it's too funny. While writing this I heard a jingle. I yelled "Rob, your phones ringing!!" He replied, "I don't have a phone in my office." I replied, "Well it's ringing, so you're wrong." He came storming into my office and said "I don't have my cell phone in my office!!!" I said "Well listen, it's right there!!!" He listened and heard what I heard and said "It's the ice cream truck you idiot!!!" We haven't stopped laughing! Yup, it was! That's my life in a nutshell. And you wonder why I no longer have a BMW. Cuz I didn't deserve it!
Love ya,
Suze XO
Oh...and I can't resist. As a Peta member, I'm so glad the octopus won. Heeeeee Hawwwwwwwww! I've always hated that tradition. See, sometimes good wins out over evil. But I'm still shivering my ass off in the stands watching this damn game. Can't this stadium provide an outlet for my electric blankie?
XO
Oh, my bad, that was supposed to be YEEEEEEEEEE HAWWWWWWWWWWWW. Fingers on wrong keys.
Bindi,
I have had a great weekend, have been visiting with my best friend K. at her place. Her Son and his girlfriend came in from Philidelphia. Had not seen them in over 2 yrs. They announced at breakfast this morning they are getting married next year!! We are so excited, we had to go celebrate.
I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday!!
Love and hugs,
Debbie
Mj,
Glad you stopped by to visit!!
Sorry about the Habs, but I know that they have won more Stanley Cups than any other team, that is quite an accomplishment, so I tip my "hat" to them.
GO Wings!!
Shara,
I am glad to see you!!
The octopus has been a home game tradition, during the play offs, in 1952 a team needed to win 8 games and the octopus has 8 tenticles, that is how that started, wikpedia has more info on this tradition.
I am surprised that it has lasted this long...
Maggie the cat loves to mess with me when I am on the computer...but I do like to gamble,a I mean "play",LOL.
Love you,
Gig
Suze,
Please tell Rob, thanks,I love my Wings!! They won again tonite!!
I was in Detroit, but not for the game, went down to play some "slops", was able to watch the end of the game while winning a little money!!!
I will remember to "root" for the Bruins next season!!
Now it is on to Pittsburgh, I think we will"sweep" them...
I have never cared for the tradition with the octipus, but they wouldn't listen to me, go figure!!!
Just got back and it is 3:30 a.m. MI time, better get some sleep, have to go home tomorrow.
Love you,
Gig
P.S. please excuse any typos
You Americans do such crazy things!!!
I enjoyed this Post immensely, Gig.
Congratulations for your team's win.
Your Posts never fail to entertain and please me. There is always something fresh and new to look forward to.
I like Maggie on the 'slops' machine. Too cute.
Cheers and beers,
M.
Hey Suze, HEE HAW used to be a television show. A really bad one.
Thanks Mark,
I am glad that you liked this post, I am always looking for something different to write about.
The Basketball playoffs are also going on right now too. The Detroit Pistons are in them, so it is a busy time in Detroit!! I have not had much time for NASCAR, other than knowing that Kyle Busch is winning everything and he is not my favorite driver.
Maggie likes to be right by me, so she helps me play!!
Cheers and beers back at ya!!
Love, Gig
Good morning Sweetie,
Please check my place... I have a little something for you...:))
have a beautiful day..
love and ((hugs))
bindi
Ps.. i got my lerners permit tuesday!
Cece, yes I know my dear young one all about Hee Haw, but NO ONE says it like Gig. She started me on this stupidity at the Cafe and I'm not leaving until I win at "slops!" or find my shoes. Well, maybe that's not true. I just love saying the words! There's a joy I feel saying them and infact was in traffic today and watched a traffic accident avoided and yelled Heeeeeee Hawwwwwww! Honestly! I know. I need therapy.
XO
When the accident was averted, I also yelled yeeeeeeeeeee hawwwwwww!
I think "The Fan" and MJ should meet. Hell, I think any of us should meet him! Merry Christmas!
hey there gig
i must have read this post and comments 3 times but somehow never leave a comment!!
time to get a system methinks :)
anyway, have a wonderful weekend
love
k
I cannot get those octopi images outta my head no matter how hard I try, LOL! Did you see "The Mist" by any chance?...tentacly horror...
Mark,
Americans sure can do some "crazy" things!! I'm glad you liked the report on the Red Wings, I enjoyed learning more about the history of the octopus...so far "Al" has just been twirling the octopi on the concourse so as to not get in any "gunk" on the ice...
Next game is Sat. We need 2 more wins for the Stanley Cup. No Problem!!
Hope you all have a great weekend,
Cheers and beers to you,
love ya, Gig
Bindi,
Thank you for the beautiful award, I will post it after the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup!!

Suze,
You're showing my age talking about Hee Haw...oh, I remember, I was just a baby when it was on,LOL
Yeeee Hawwww, boot scootin, boogie!!
Ok, I think it is time to party like there is no tomorrow!! I know I am ready...maybe I will just sit back and watch...

My v8 Blog, "Holden Hero" is up to date - Round 3, Hamilton 400, New Zealand. Of course, if you have already seen them this comment will be old news.
Congratulations upon the success of your ice hockey team.
Cheers & beers,
Mark. xx
